About Bishkek

Bishkek is a capital of Kyrgyzstan, (however, the capital of the Chuy Province) part of Soviet Union in the past; located in Central Asia, near the northern country border (neighboring Kazakhstan). Previously built as a fortress in 1825, named “Pishpek”; situated on the Silk Road as a rest and control point, serving as well for collecting contributions from local tribes.

In 1860-68 years, annexed by Tsarist Russia, was rebuilt as a town, instead of destroyed fortress, persisting former name- Pishpek. Afterward became part of Soviet Union and was renamed to “Frunze”, year 1926 (in honor of Mikhael Frunz- Russian military leader.) being the capital of Kyrgyz ASSR. After Soviet Union collapse in 1991, local parliament adjusted name “Bishkek” and obtained independence later that year.

Current city of Bishkek is blend of soviet and modern architecture, with wide squares and numerous green areas. City itself is arranged off the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, surrounded by mountains, what gives you possibility to view whole area from above. The Chui River intersects entire region of the town, giving opportunities for business, sport activities and touristic amusements, such as rafting and fishing. Transportation is allover easy, major road have been recently rehabilitated and construction completely. Its easy to travel by train from the city to other part of the country; The Railway covers long distance of the region, about 320km of single track lines, but still train traveling options are limited due to mountainous territory. There is all access metro lines, which gives one easy and fast way to appear in any part of the town in no time.

Climate is quite amiable, despite chilly winters (what is good news for those who enjoys relaxing in mountains in winter and is fond of such sports as Skiing, Skating, Hokey or Curling ) Temperature ranges approximately from -10°C in winter and +30°C in summer.
